Winter bugs tend to cruel, to people whose ancestors did not live through harsh winters. To live through freezing temperatures is an evolutionary novelty for our species.
Not cruel enough to break into a house and kill people’s children. Not cruel enough to open fire on a festival. Not cruel enough to kidnap elderly and children. But still cruel.
Have a look with me at something. At age 35-44, non-Hispanic black Americans were 9 times more likely to die of SARS2, than white Americans of that age. Hispanic Americans of that age were 8.8 times more likely to die. Asians of that age were just 2.4 times more likely to die. Within this data set however, Arab Americans are treated as non-Hispanic white. In Europe, you see similar elevated risk for the migrant population, particularly Pakistani and Black British citizens.
The reason I’m pointing this out is because this virus is not about to fade away. The world has now simply changed, we’re now living with a respiratory virus far more lethal than any of the other respiratory viruses we’re used to getting. I’ve pointed out a while ago that with BA.2.86, this virus is returning to pre-Omicron behavior. It’s getting good at infecting the lower lungs again:
The CaLu-3 cells are a good indicator of this.
In about a year, this virus evolved to develop three new mutations in its Spike protein. But now with the BA.2.86 descendant JN.1, you’re looking at 29 Spike mutations, including a big insertion in the NTD. If you believe that novelty is severity, you would expect increased severity.
BA.2.86 needed some time to make optimal use of its genetic changes. It has now figured out how to change the main position where antibodies could still neutralize it, resulting in JN.1, which is now spreading much faster than BA.2.86 itself has so far.
The growth rate tells the whole story:
You now have a new serotype, which will probably coexist with the XBB serotype, or it might force it into extinction.
What I would recommend is to avoid partaking in cruelty and to stand up against injustice when you see it. This includes not eating animals.
Humanity has been sending a lot of signals that it is choosing to fail to live up to its responsibilities.
This will result in an enormous intervention by nature.
Please remember: When the world betrays and abandons you, that’s when you are alone with God.
