You can say I spend too much time, paying attention to American politics. But do we in Europe now have to send thousands of our finest young men to die in Ukraine, because the Americans abandon the old continent and give away all negotiating power we have against Russia?
Ukrainians do not want to be conquered by Russia, whether they live in Donbass or Lviv, they never asked for any of this and they carried no ill will towards the Russian nation. Ukrainian men have been dying in droves, to defend their nation. The adult men go first, so that eighteen year old boys still have a chance to experience at least a semblance of a normal life, until it is their turn to nourish the soil with their blood.
They do not want to be a Russian protectorate. They do not want to have their provinces annexed by Russia. They do not want Russia to set up rebel groups in Donbas, that turned life into a nightmare for local citizens. They do not want to have North Koreans, African mercenaries, Chechens and others marauding through their nation. They want to be part of Europe.
And Europe can’t afford to let Russia bully us around, so eventually there will be European troops on the ground if America abandons us, which it seems keen on doing. Europe will not abandon its friends. Obviously, Europeans wish this did not happen. Europe is not a continent where people hunger for war. We wish the world’s most powerful people had done their duty of avoiding this scenario.
But when our neighbor sends 1500 men into an early grave every day, recruited from all around the world, to destroy Ukraine, a nation where people did not ask for this and did nothing to deserve it, where people die every day to keep out these invaders and preserve their liberty, what choice do we have?
Do we just ignore how we Europeans are being stabbed in the back and abandoned by everyone? Europe tries to keep our planet habitable. That is our focus. We decarbonize our continent. We reforest our continent. We rewild our continent. There are wolves wandering through the Netherlands now. And we had hoped that the rest of the world would understand, that this should be our global priority, if we want our children to have a future worth living. But the Bolshevik horde invaded our continent and they are looking with hunger at the Baltics.

But when we are in trouble, who helps us?

And then they will just let them squeeze the poor dry. But the Americans stand and look at this and do nothing. They have piles of guns, but they stand and do nothing. They let a handful of billionaires destroy our world and they do nothing.
There are parts of the US where you get shot when you wear the wrong color shirt or walk on private property. But you can slash taxes on corporations and the billionaires and you can make healthcare unaffordable to tens of millions of their working class citizens, making it so that they will be saddled with bills they can not pay when they give birth in a hospital to a baby, they will just stand and cheer on the sidelines for you.
Their children are fat, because they can’t afford to feed them healthy food. Billions in subsidies go towards dairy and meat producers, but they can’t afford an apple at Whole Foods. The average American doesn’t know what a pomegranate looks like, let alone ever offers one to their son to see whether that will get him off the candy and chips.
Like the Russians, who have just resigned themselves to entire villages full of young men being drafted and forced to die in Ukraine by their government, for nothing, for abandoned farmland covered in unexploded munition and destroyed cities with nobody left living in them, the Americans are a docile submissive people.
Americans like Vance come here to Europe, to lecture us about the “Great Replacement”. “Oh Europe is too brown, why did you let so many brown people into your country, you ruin my immersive open air museum experience, I want to see sexy women with hairy armpits carrying around baguettes in Paris, not homeless Senegalese men sleeping on the street”.
Well, that’s Europe for you. Victims of their own empathy. Europeans took their responsibility to their former colonies seriously. In the Netherlands we gave independence to Suriname, because giving independence to our colonies is what Americans wanted Europeans to do, so then a third of the population of Suriname wanted to move to the Netherlands and we let them.

If France and Britain had not divided most of Africa and South Asia, Germany, Russia, the Ottomans and Italy would have taken it instead. The colonial era was for all practical purposes, an historical inevitability. But would the Ottomans, who shipped millions of African children over the Sahara and mutilated their bodies have been better stewards of Africa? A power vacuum will be filled, that is how the world works.
Were the Ottomans better friends of the Africans? Were the Mughals better friends of the Indians? Are the Javanese better friends of the Papuans than the Dutch were? The reality of life is that there will always be people in control. And when I look at the abolition of slavery in Africa by the British and the French, or the missionary campaigns in colonial Kenya by protestant British women to abolish female genital mutilation, I struggle to think of people who would have done a better job than we did, when the circumstances of history handed us the keys to global dominance.

Parts of the world where people murdered women accused of witchcraft, where men married nine year old girls, where 90% of the population was illiterate, now had to start governing themselves in accordance to democratic norms. That’s what the Americans wanted. But did you ever feel a responsibility to make sure the people there actually benefited from decolonization? Of course not, because the only real purpose of decolonization was to force Europe into submission and make Africa ripe for corporate exploitation. If that means the Central African Republic now becomes an empire run by a cannibal, then that’s not America’s problem.
America staged a coup in Guatemala in 1954, because their government dared to end exploitative labor practices used by the United Fruit Company, so the company successfully lobbied American congress to install a new government. But then when in 1956 the Suez crisis broke out, after Egypt under Nasser nationalized the canal, America was there to lecture the British and the French. Oh no Britain and France, you don’t run this blue marble anymore!
So yes, there are a lot of homeless Nigerians selling sunglasses on the streets of Rome now. But hey, have you ever noticed that Nigeria has had a fertility rate above 5 children per woman, for at least the past sixty years now? You’re misreading what Igor wrote. He’s saying that IF Europe wants to win a war against Russia, they need to send young men to die. But he doesn’t think that Europe should try to win a war against Russia. For among other reasons, they would lose.
Rintrah seems to think a war against Russia could be won. I’m not sure where he thinks the soldiers to fight such a war would come from. Some poor schlub in Arkansas is not going to be interested in fighting such a war, and the American public is not interested in sending Arkansas Guy there to be pulverized.
It was the tone of what he wrote. Nobody in Europe wants a war, except perhaps for a few Russian people, probably none of whom are actually physically fighting on the front lines right now. It’s not a defect in one’s moral character, to not want to send young men from their own country (or others’ countries for that matter) to die in a meat grinder.
Nor does the opinion or views of the Russian state hold any weight except as a means of understanding how they’re going to act. What I said, is that it is absurd to claim that the United States is the aggressor in this war, when the actual, material reality is that troops from Russia are actively engaged in invading a region whose people disapprove of the military occupation and wish to govern themselves. It’s unfortunate about what’s happening in Ukraine, letting Russia invade any country it pleases isn’t acceptable, but accelerating the war and turning it into World War 3 also isn’t that appealing. Maybe it might be useful to hear the voices of real people in Donbas, who are in general rather glad to be rid of the Ukrainian government (after all, it were Locals, who resisted after the Maidan-Putsch in 2014) and also I would advise to travel to Russia and Ukraine yourself Radagast, to get a better view of the peoples opinions.
