I guess I just think that people who are experiencing a mental health crisis or who come from a family with a long history of mental illness shouldn’t be reproducing, especially if they are suicidal and hate this world, because that tendency will be imprinted on that child, because in that first year of life it’s all nonverbal body language and emotional psychic energy that they soak up like a sponge.
Well, there is that. I used to take that point extremely seriously, but I now think that people can make exceptions if they desperately want to have a kid. The genes do mix. Also, it is substantially genetic and there will be cures. People have to have hope. If they know they are a mess then they can seek good care for the child from the start.
There was a study in mice; if the baby mice were cared for in part by a mouse doula then they didn’t end with the same trauma as they would have if they were raised solely by their biological mother. My parents were fine but my grandmother made some horrible mistakes (due to ignorance) that affected me and my brother; you can’t fully control any of this.
Rintrah is the firstborn son and so he subconsciously sees it as his duty to continue his family line. He feels that if he achieves other things that he is making up for not performing that duty. As it happens, his proposed other achievements (helping reduce human overpopulation) conflict with his reproducing biologically. I have a neighbor who is 65 y.o. and her two sons, who are in their mid twenties, have decided that they don’t want to have kids. And she is mad at me about it, because I intentionally didn’t have kids. Even though I barely know her sons. It is somehow my fault; I have done something bad to the culture with my example. She is in grandma mode and frantic because at this point she is so old that any grandbabies (her word) might not even remember her. Obviously I’m not a dude, even though some here think I am, but as an only child born to parents raised in the Catholic faith, who came from relatively large families, I can recognize that there would be an imperative for the first born son to have children and carry on the family name, but I just think that the way he is publicly going about it is the wrong way.

You seem to be describing two different approaches. On the one hand you are saying that a person should focus on “understanding the system” so that we can devise a “working game plan.” I think that is both egotistical (we don’t have that capacity; we are very limited) and hopeless. That is Tryptie’s error; a reliance on one’s own reason and self due to overweening ego. At the same time you are saying something that is correct, which is that we can only know the truth through direct experience. That is right. God will tell us what we need to know if we listen. He understands our weaknesses and limitations. But this direct experience does not always require a lot of spiritual seeking. If God wants to reach a person He can do it instantly and without a bunch of fuss on the person’s part. It is true that there were people in the Scriptures who did not lose their ego and did see God. I didn’t say otherwise. I said it was egotistical to think you can personally work out some sort of game plan. You know almost nothing about the world or the universe; you’re working from a position of near absolute ignorance (as am I). If you come up with a functioning game plan it is not because your tiny self found it; it is because God decided to let you possess it.

I have started to put each instance of the “I have never had sex” talk into the “I have never eaten a rutabaga” category. A rutabaga is a root vegetable; it is grown in loamy soil. Some people love rutabagas; some despise them and will only eat turnips. What would a rutabaga taste like? How is it stored?? What is its genetic lineage? It is amazing how many thoughts one can have about a rutabaga. Many people have eaten them; most people in some cultures. I like rutabagas, part of the cabbage family, but everytime I hear the word the word ‘rutabaga’ my mind goes back to the 1960s, when I was strongly warned by a neighbor lady not to eat the leaves of her rutabaga patch because they were sheer poison and would kill me.
I’ve believed that ever since, that rutabaga leaves were deadly, but I just now looked it up and this is not true at all – they’re just bitter and so you won’t eat them raw.
I never touched her rutabagas but I did stop and look at them. It’s strange now to have memories of the 1960s.
I wonder, was she more concerned about my health as a cute kid, or me messing with her garden?
She was worried that a kid might squash the leaves and that she wouldn’t get her full crop. Not malicious on her part; realistic.
