The problem with investing is that to be good at it requires you to believe in a future so awful that anyone not evil would just commit suicide instead. I do still have half a million dollar to my name, but I can’t say investing has been a success for me. It’s a lot of nervousness, for no results. The irony is, if I just bought an index fund instead, I would now be a millionaire. So I’m exiting the market, I’m done with this, it hurts my brain.
I succeeded at not making money during the AI boom. And that’s obvious. I’m just too innocent to have a good time in the stock market, it’s like sending a monk to a brothel. I really liked to think we were going to end up in a future that’s not just a bunch of billionaires living in bunkers while the rest of us slowly die of hunger and heatwaves beneath their AI control grid. But alas.
Two years ago I was pretty sure that Tesla was going to crash and bought a bunch of put options in response. It was of course a failure, they expired worthless. All you have to do is put a dancing robot on stage and get Trump re-elected and people just won’t care that your car business is crashing into the ground.
Like the COVID lockdowns, like real estate, the stock market is a boomer game, designed to isolate boomers from any hardship in reality. Once Tesla entered the SP 500, the entire American system converged on propping it up, lest they have another Enron. The Arab gulf sheikhs are now buying cybertrucks from their American overlords. None of these people like Musk, but he’s an integral part of the system, as he manages to convince about half of young men (referred to by some as low IQ low status white males) that capitalism is cool.
I would go a step further and say that insider trading is such a huge problem that you can’t realistically expect to win in the market without inside information. Everyone has information about Trump’s tariffs, they know when they’re implemented, they know when he chickens out, they trade based on this advance knowledge. We’re not living in the 50’s anymore, the game is no longer fair.
You know how aging works. Everything gets steadily worse at an agonizingly slow pace. Well, that’s our world too.
The upside, is that it’s true for the bad guys too. Musk had a great time the first time he scammed people, when he was in his twenties and had built this giant fake computer around a small computer to make his company seem more impressive to a bunch of idiots who offered him tens of millions for it.
But today, he doesn’t seem to be enjoying himself anymore:

And now you might say to yourself: Well, can’t you win by simply endorsing the system? Can’t you just become a total soulless turbonormie, who says to himself: “Well AI is really the future it’s going to revolutionize everything I love living in Peter Thiel’s AI control grid, the face-scanning cameras will keep me safe!”
The answer is no. When you truly, absolutely buy into the system, when you truly internalize the whole thing and become dependent on it, when you yourself become the system, when the idea of the system breaking down starts to genuinely horrify you… that’s when the plug is pulled and the whole thing crashes.
You think I’m making this up, but my coworker’s dad has this acquaintance, who lost all his money when he bought Shell stock with a small amount of leverage and the COVID lockdowns started. When you completely submit before the system, it will just rob you of the last thing you have to offer it, your dignity.
The whole thing after all, is a machine powered by your suffering and your only real option to enjoy life is to become a masochist who enjoys being tortured. That’s what you spend every moment in the gym for too. You torture yourself with weights and pain and heat and after a while you feel slightly better as a result. Suffering feeds the demons and they then reward you in exchange for more suffering.
Things are only vaguely causally and mathematically related in this world, whatever happens has to be within the realm of possibilities, but the realm of possibilities has become absolutely massive, as your massive monkeybrain allows the electron to reshape your whole external world in just about whatever way it wants.
It’s like you’re living in a story. Unlikely things will happen in a story when they improve the quality of the story, causal mechanisms can just be invented on the fly to help the story along. Your story is about someone unbearably naive, who always loses as a result.

As a child, one of my favorite pastimes was climbing the trees in my neighborhood.

Only one piece of advice, if I may; I’ve been thinking (reading some of the dialogue here): Take more notes about the sayings of people who care for you, like Wombat, who also happens to be mature and sound. Don’t pay attention to the theories of people who have other things going on in their heads, e.g. some authors, directors, creators, leaders of cults or heresies (e.g. Gnosticism). Some authors etc may want to be famous, mostly. So, you’re better off looking for healthy, than impressive.
You need to give Mehen some specific options. And not just Orthodoxy. I know a number of people who sought out an Orthodox church but found there were none in their area, or else that ones in their area were very troubled places. There is one near where I live but I was told by an elderly Russian lady who belongs to it that it is a nest of vipers, and I found out independently that that is true. I have an acquaintance whose husband is a member of a different Orthodox church in the area, and it is the same; you are expected to get involved in their internecine battles. And not just to the degree that that happens in any group; to an extreme degree. The faith is correct but the people have brought their crazy ancestral and familial hatreds and feuds to the U.S. and it is not any kind of universal church here. So, if he is in the U.S., should he be Roman Catholic? Baptist? Methodist? Lutheran? Should he join a bible church? Or what?
I don’t have first-hand experience of America and your society. Indeed, the “tribalism” among the Orthodox in America that you just described sounds really sad.
What I would do though is, I would send an American like Mehen to Fr. Andrew Damick (who is perfectly American), hoping that they may be able to share relatable things. I think that Russia’s hypersonic missiles, which fly while wrapped in plasma, are an amazing technology. They fly at low altitude at Mach 10 and change their approach angle when they hit, so interception seems to be almost impossible. ICBMs also re-enter the atmosphere at about Mach 12, but they are possible to intercept because their trajectory is a simple parabolic motion from high altitude.
If Russia uses hypersonic missiles, it could sink the nuclear aircraft carriers sent to gain air superiority in one shot. The same goes for other important strategic facilities deployed in the rear. If you put a nuclear warhead on a hypersonic missile and fly it and detonate it at high altitude, you can attack using a powerful magnetic pulse. Unlike the use in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where heat rays and blast waves directly destroyed cities and people, this will cause invisible and irreparable damage to electronic devices.
Some people may not even realize that their city has been attacked, but all products incorporating semiconductors and other such products will be destroyed, including infrastructure, over a wide area that will be affected. Since they will all be destroyed at the same time, there will be no prospect of recovery. If nuclear missile attacks were to be carried out in this style, we can imagine a situation in which they would fire at each other. In a single day, that city would become an SDGs city.
