Atmospheric microplastics and nanoplastics are now believed to be causing warming, by functioning as a forcing in their own right. Under the new assumptions, their color causes them to absorb sunlight, whereas under old assumptions, they simply reflected sunlight.
The impact is currently very minor. It’s estimated at around 0.02 °C today.
But then there is another effect you need to take into consideration: Our carbon sinks weaken as a result of plastics pollution. A plant that is dealing with plastics pollution is less competent at sequestering CO2.
So, there’s a very minor contributor to global warming that nobody is taking seriously. Who cares right? Well, here’s the thing. It generally takes decades for plastic pollution to turn into microplastics and then from microplastics into nanoplastics. Most of the warming currently being caused by plastic pollution is due to nanoplastics, rather than microplastics.
You’re currently mainly seeing the impact on global warming, of plastics we produced decades ago. Overall production has roughly doubled over the past two decades.
If you try to come up with a best case scenario for plastics production, where we agree to a global treaty to dramatically reduce global plastics production by 2030, production then begins to fall and leakage into the environment falls, you still find yourself facing the reality that the impact of microplastics on global temperatures is going to grow, simply because it takes decades for the plastics you produced to reveal their true impact.
Under this best case scenario, if you were to take only plastics into consideration (not all the other unincluded issues we’re dealing with) you can expect that our carbon budgets should actually be 15% lower to stay under 1.5 degree and 7% lower to stay under 2 degree than we currently estimate. That’s what I consider the best estimate, under a best case scenario where we rapidly start reducing our plastics production by 2030 and get much better at ensuring none of it leaks into the environment.
Effectively no climate scientists are seriously looking at how plastics pollution impacts our overall chances of keeping global warming under control. When you hear about climate change in the media, you hear about what charlatans like Michael Mann and Zeke Hausfather are predicting. If you search really hard, you may hear from people who are actually honest about the scope of the predicament we face, like James Hansen, Rockstrom and Schellnuber.
Schellnuber by the way, has actual balls. He pointed out that if you continue on this trajectory you have all collectively agreed upon, as you all jump in your airplane to go to another exotic destination this summer that happened to be on your bucket list, the Earth will have a carrying capacity below 1 billion. Not some Dutch guy with a blog, an actual scientist. Billions of people will just die because the Earth will become too warm to keep them alive.
So take what I just explained to you. James Hansen, Rockström, Schellnuber, these people are seen as prophets of doom. And yet, those people have not yet incorporated into their models what happens if we continue producing plastics at the growing rate that we are producing them. This is an entirely new source of warming, on top of everything else that people have been investigating.

Well, now take a look at what is considered the realistic trajectory for plastics production. Annual production will double between now and 2060. In fact, annual production is not expected to peak until 2100. There is NO SERIOUS ATTEMPT to reduce our global plastic production.
There is effectively no serious attempt yet to reduce microplastics and nanoplastics pollution in our environment, even though the evidence suggests it plays a substantial role in future global warming that no climate models take into proper consideration yet.
If plastics pollution was taken into serious consideration, we would have to acknowledge the climate change crisis is even more severe and difficult to solve than we thought and the risk of breaching important tipping points is also more acute than we thought it is.
So, what can we actually expect to change about global warming by 2100, as a result of plastic pollution? Well, this is difficult to put an accurate number on, but the estimate I have right now is 0.2 degree Celsius by 2100, on top of everything else we already face. That should shock you and if you are a climate scientist, it should immediately spur you into action to take a good look at the plastics problem.
So, this is a newly recognized feedback loop, that will be adding roughly as much global warming by 2100 as the melting permafrost will, unless you morons somehow manage to get your governments to reduce plastic production.
I think it’s arguably worse than 0.2 degree Celsius for two reasons:
- Warming begets warming. The warming from the microplastics, leads to further permafrost melting, which leads to further warming, in a nasty loop of positive feedback.
- I’m only looking at the two direct effect of microplastics and nanoplastics here: Absorbing sunlight and harming our natural ecosystems ability to absorb carbon for us. As I have explained before, those plastics in our soils also reduce agricultural yields. If that forces farmers whose soils have been polluted with plastic to deforest neighboring land to increase their food production, or if it forces them to use more fertilizer, then microplastics and nanoplastics are indirectly responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions.
Yeah, no need to say thank you. In regards to me, all I ask for, as I spend my days explaining to you what kind of insanity lies ahead of you that’s going to be killing billions of people, is that I’m allowed to spend my days sedating myself with a cocktail of various psychoactive drugs, without any harassment from government, law enforcement, family or other authorities. A woman would be nice too, but I would already be happy if I’m allowed to just do my own thing without people bothering me.
What if the entire world transitioned to a deflationary currency regime?
Serious question, though I hold little conviction.
If your shekels are slowly gaining value over time, you will only part with them in exchange for something actually valuable, either in necessity or in quality. You will not have the inflationary incentive to just go spend them on SOMETHING before they inflate away, nor will companies have similar incentive and reasoning to always be investing in their own growth.
The best part about this is that all it would take to pull off is for a tiny number of banking overlords to change some numbers in a computer. If like ten jews decided it, then this would be so.

I’ve been trying to remember how vegetables like carrots were sold in the supermarket in the mid 1970s. I wanted it to be my own memory, not something from the internet. Veggies certainly weren’t in plastic like now; there wasn’t a lot of plastic packaging. Then I realized; my mom was a real Yankee; all of our vegetables came in cans. Except for the ones we grew in the back yard in the summer. Canned peas, canned corn, canned carrots. Only the Italians in the cities had fresh produce; they actually ate garlic. Mushrooms can break down plastics. “The discovery of Pestalotiopsis’ ability to decompose plastic led to further research into plastic decomposition by fungi. Researchers have now found that many species are capable of plastic bioremediation including the common edible oyster mushroom. The oyster mushroom is capable of decomposing plastic while still creating an edible mushroom. This opens up doors for its use as an at-home recycling system. Austrian researcher Katharina Unger created a prototype of an at-home oyster mushroom recycling system called the “Fungi Mutarium.” In the “Fungi Mutarium,” pieces of plastic would be placed in capsules containing the oyster mushroom. The fungi would then grow on the capsule where it could be harvested for… Read more »
Thank you. I just went on a pretty rough trip, but I’m back now. I guess we all have to endure as best we can. At least the beetle was okay.
To a memorial service that I had to set up from a distance. I didn’t mention it here. If I have been ill humored for a while it is because of dealing closely with another person’s decline since October and death in March. Along with the psychological side there was also a very big logistical side. This is the sort of stuff that females typically deal with, but since my brain isn’t totally normal a lot of the social aspect does not come easily and I had to work out each part for it to go okay, including dealing with many truly stupid people whose help and cooperation was crucial. The last seven months have been really bad. But now that is over and I can just deal with the usual issues of existence, I hope.

The question is whether or not you have dependents. Anything said to a person who has dependents (whom they care about) would be flip, since a person with dependents has real responsibilities.
My degrowth plan if I had no dependents would be to be homeless in a decent climate and eat potatoes roasted in a barrel and drink just enough wine to enjoy it and to develop a very wide network of fellow homeless people and grow food plants in random places in the vicinity.
I’ve known people who lived that way. Some homeless people are the most sociable people you’ll ever know, and they are sociable in a way that is tolerable to the autistic. Some are even homeless because they are so sociable that they can’t manage a regular job.
Then if one blogged about it, others might live that way.
Since what the planet needs is that level of consumerism; that is real degrowth-level. It is also a natural state for humans.
That was my reply to Wombat when he asked what others’ degrowth plans were. I don’t know how it jumped to here.
Oh, I see. Wombat erased his posts.
I also love living in a world of infinite resources
Plastics are just another human-harming building material, like lead paint, hormone-based flame retardant additives and arsenical bronze. The whole class of things is popular because the price of life is low and their acceptance would be different if we actually valued human life instead of pretending.

I love working with wood, and on my car.
But to what end?
Apart from the distraction their hobbies provide them from confronting their inevitable death, and the death of everyone and everything around them, I mean.
As someone once said, look around you. Every living thing you see will someday die, and you will be forgotten. The grass, the trees, the animals, the pets, the family members. All return to dust, only to be reborn again after your individual life is gone.
For what purpose?
This is the mystery I am attempting to solve.
What is it for a thing to have a purpose? That is the first question you have to address if you want to try to solve this in the usual way.
Thanks for the tip, Wombat. I don’t disagree. I have explicitly stated on this blog that I have a pessimistic bias, and I make no bones about it. I attribute this to my congenitally sensitive nature, but — no offence to you — I have found that men who thrive in this world have a kind of thick skin which inures them to the many pains, hypocrisies, stupidities and falsities of this world. Such men seem to have a kind of immune system which “eats” all the shit this world offers up, but in no way do I endorse this state of affairs. I realize you are more noble and idealistic than most, but I think this whole “reality system” is rotten to its core. I believe “reality” is cracked and corrupt at its foundation, and due to this fact, all attempts to “make a better world” are doomed to failure (although these hopes and ideals do provide individuals with a sense of meaning and significance). On this blog, I have previously quoted Thomas Ligotti’s book “The Conspiracy Against The Human Race,” in particular his razor sharp discussion of the difference between those who believe “BEING ALIVE IS ALRIGHT” versus… Read more »
*Pessimism II* In his lengthy study Pessimism (1877), James Sully wrote that “a just and correct estimate of life is to be looked for” in “views … which lean neither to the favourable nor the unfavourable pole.” By this claim, Sully erred in his otherwise able dissection of his subject. People are either pessimists or optimists. They forcefully “lean” one way or the other, and there is no common ground between them. For pessimists, life is something that should not be, which means that what they believe should be is the absence of life, nothing, non-being, the emptiness of the uncreated. Anyone who speaks up for life as something that irrefutably should be—that we would not be better off unborn, extinct, or forever lazing in nonexistence —is an optimist. It is all or nothing; one is in or one is out, abstractly speaking. Practically speaking, we have been a race of optimists since the nascency of human consciousness and lean like mad toward the favorable pole. More stylish in his examination of pessimism than Sully is the American novelist and part-time philosopher Edgar Saltus, whose Philosophy of Disenchantment (1885) and The Anatomy of Negation (1886) were written for those who… Read more »
*Undoing III* When people are asked to respond to the statement “I am happy—true or false,” the word “true” is spoken more often than “false,” overwhelmingly so. If there is some loss of face in confessing that one is not happy, this does not mean that those who profess happiness as their dominant humor are lying through their teeth. People want to be happy. They believe they should be happy. And if some philosopher says they can never be happy because their consciousness has ensured their unhappiness, that philosopher will not be part of the dialogue, especially if he blathers about discontinuing our species by ceasing to bear children who can also never be happy even though, to extend the point, they can also never be unhappy given their inexperience of existing. Ask Zapffe: “So you ask whether I would choose to be unborn? One must be born in order to choose, and the choice involves destruction. But ask my brother in that chair over there. Indeed, it is an empty one; my brother did not get so far. Yet ask him, as he is traveling like the wind below the sky, crashing against the beach, scenting in the grass,… Read more »

He’s starting to slow down.
“ Optimism has always been an undeclared policy of human culture—one that grew out of our animal instincts to survive and reproduce—rather than an articulated body of thought. It is the default condition of our blood and cannot be effectively questioned by our minds or put in grave doubt by our pains. This would explain why at any given time there are more cannibals than philosophical pessimists.”

All things are chained and entwined together, all things are in love, if you ever wanted one moment twice, if you ever said: ‘You please me, happiness, instant, moment!’ then you wanted everything to return! you wanted everything anew, everything eternal, everything chained, entwined together, everything in love, O that is how you loved the world, you everlasting men, loved it eternally, and for all time: and you say even to woe. ‘Go, but return!’ For all joy wants — eternity!”
Thanks for the rec, Wombat. I was unfamiliar with it (before my time).
And you are correct that I resemble in certain ways the character you are alluding to. (I would call him “Mopenhauer”)
But I would remind you that if you assent to Life, you also assent to all its attendant horrors. Can you consciously assent to those horrors, or will you, like most men, place a filter on your mind which allows “Good Stuff” in, and “Bad Stuff” out?
If you truly wish to be “heroic”, you would be well advised to remember Nietzsche:
“Did you ever say Yes to one joy? O my friends, then you said Yes to all woe as well.

Rad, my comments seem to be getting blocked, or under moderation?
Rob, no more than one link at a time.
For awhile I couldn’t even post one link.
I can’t even be bothered re-posting what I wrote. Yes, mass migration is a disaster and I can’t conceive of a way to can stop it other than blowing the ships out the water, which is just sick. (The Greeks a couple of years back were caught by some NGOs shipping migrants out into the middle of the Aegean on dingy boats and just leaving them there in the baking sun. The Greek Gov tried to blame it on a rogue police officer, if I remember correctly). As you’ve said before, climate change and other factors will just increase it 100 fold over the coming decades.
As for that terrible word ‘cunt.’ It seems to be a UK/Australian thing. It can refer to a person: “this cunt is sound mate” or “ask this cunt over here.”
When it’s used in an abusive context it’s usually directed towards males, not female; in the US, it seems to be a pejorative word directed against females.
This from Dylan isn’t quite as dark.
https://youtu.be/omyhWd1EwJk?is=Nk46C0-ub4uZFV2o
You need to wash your mouth out with soap. I didn’t down vote him, and I’m sure Karen didn’t either. By the way, calling someone a cunt is much more offensive than calling a man a dick or an asshole, and it’s very offensive to females, because it sounds a lot like cut, like to cut the vagina, as in sexual violence.
I don’t have a problem with men calling other men a cunt, or using the term generally. It is different when they are directly calling a woman a cunt because there is usually an extreme level of rage when that happens; kind of “I hate women” cosmic rage which doesn’t necessarily have much to do with the woman it is directed to. So it is less the word than the rage. If the person has genuinely done something deserving of that rage than whatever word is appropriate (sort of). It is true that it is a very powerful vulgarity. I think maybe it is used more in Australia than in the U.S. and hence Wombat’s casual use of it; it is pretty rarely used here.
I have mixed feelings about Dylan although why would I downvote Dylan; that would be silly. I think he is both great and a bit of a fake. I think he pretends to be dark but actually sits around eating Cheetoes and drinking Mountain Dew and having some fun, and the darkness is a persona. That’s okay, however; I hope it is true.
He is from Down Under. There, everybody is a cunt.
Ah, that makes sense. A certain kind of retarded sense.
My extra chromosome provides me with unique insight.
It’s used very extensively in working class areas of the UK, particularly Scotland. People will use it just to reference someone: “ just ask that cunt down there “ or “that cunt, John, he was telling us about” and so on.
It’s usually directed more towards males than females when used aggressively. From watching US films and TV shows it seems to be the opposite; it’s rare that a man will be called a cunt.
Down in Aussie Down-Under, only a total Aussie cunt would call a woman a cunt. This is what they call “a cunt act”. Women Down Under are instead called “you filthy fucking slag bitch” – or simply “dirty filthy slags”.
In the U.S. it is used rarely, only used towards women, and it is meant in very nasty way. Hence Big Bird’s reaction.
My comment was for Wombat, but he apparently deleted his comment, as well has his reply to me. What he said was that whoever downvoted Charlie was a cunt. From where I’m from men usually only call women cunts, not men. So I figured that he was referring to you or I. I didn’t realize cunt has a different connotation in Australia. Apparently men there call each other cunts in a similar way to how some black men call each other niggas. I guess it’s to be expected though in a country whose inhabitants are mostly descended from convicts and slaves that vulgarity would be the norm. Here’s what AI says about it: The social impact of calling a woman a cunt versus a man a dick varies significantly by region and cultural context, often creating a perceived double standard in American English. United States Context In the US, calling a woman a cunt is widely regarded as extremely offensive, often carrying misogynistic undertones and implying she is worthless or dehumanized. In contrast, calling a man a dick is a relatively mild insult meaning he is annoying, petty, or a “jerk.” Many argue this disparity stems from patriarchal norms where female… Read more »

I have stories too. Never had a union job but i tried to help organize a union unsuccessfully. I was deep into the environmental movement in northern California, especially around the Redwood Summer of 1990. https://www.hcn.org/issues/52-11/north-reckoning-with-history-the-lessons-of-redwood-summer-thirty-years-later Judi Bari, who was apparently carbombed by the FBI (!), her death, that fucker Charles Hurwitz, police torture of chained up activists, i remember all of that. Furious arguments at work. I participated in many leftist demonstrations starting with Bush and Iraq (even then some of them had to include their hatred of Israel, which i never understood). Several times i joined demonstrations at the gates of the Bohemian Grove because i didn’t like them (that was interesting). I attended a meeting of Earth First!, got close but never joined. Just recently i met one of the Monkey Wrench Gang who enjoyed doing nasty work such as tree spiking and equipment sabotage. He actually knew Julia Butterfly and exactly where her tree was. Discovering Derrick Jensen and hearing him advocating for the overthrow of industrial civilization was mind blowing to me. (You can actually write stuff like that?? Legally?) The last demonstration i was at was Occupy Wall St in 2010. That one got… Read more »
What you are describing having done is by no means trivial, but what Wombat is talking about is a readiness to literally and immediately die to protect others, which is not the same. Having kids magnifies this infinitely, but it may still be there even without kids. Once you decide that because you are a man you have to be willing to do this, then you are at all times halfway in that state (women sometimes have to, but it is more of once in great while thing; it is not part of their identity and sense of self as women). It is really a brutal thing. You are face to face with something really dark, and you know that your sacrifice/death might not be noticed at all and in fact it probably won’t be (but that is why there are sagas). But that as a male that is really all you were made for, perhaps. You can get understanding and support from other males – or not. They might just kill you instead and then kill your family. It has been noted that it is a physical state, other animals put themselves into it. Even ants, if they are… Read more »
Karen, what do you think should be top of the list for me to die for?
I’d sacrifice myself for my family but I have no family.
Tell me.
The upcoming return the Mashiach. This time, a tech-bro, not a carpenter.
You should be eager to sacrifice yourself for whatever you expect other men to sacrifice themselves for.
So, off to Ukraine with you!!!
In addition to that, how would I know. I imagine it depends on the man and on the circumstances.
Ukraine isn’t my war, I had nothing to do with it. But yes, I think Russia has the stronger argument.
If you pacifist Quakers had your way the US would have been conquered and overrun 10 times by now.
Apology accepted.
