Nothing ever happens

Just a short comment. Peak Oilers used to argue back in the 00’s and early 10’s oil would become too expensive to extract for us to keep using it. This made sense and seemed to be reflected in high prices. But then as prices collapsed again, their narrative became the economy was just no longer able to sustain the high prices necessary to extract the oil.

And I would accept this narrative, if there were some actual signs of it, like, you know, a decline in the use of oil. There are of course no such signs. The system happily began to add synthetic crude, shale oil and all sorts of other unconventional stuff to the pile of regular oil that it consumes. There’s also no signs of this changing anytime soon. As the Arctic now melts, new oil will be available for extraction.

But the best evidence that Peak Oil was a total nothingburger, a non-event, is the simple fact that Americans today continue to buy and drive around in SUV’s. In fact, cars in Europe are growing bigger now too. If there’s anything symbolic of a society having more oil available than it knows what to do with, it is the SUV. It’s not the occasional millionaire either, it’s the regular guy in the street who drives around in these gas guzzlers, in 2025, when we were supposed to be well into the decline of oil.

The main thing we were promised, that peak oil would save us from climate change, turned out to be wrong. Nothing ever happened.

Now you might wonder, isn’t this whole mRNA COVID vaccine culminating in a nothingburger in the end too? There hasn’t been an apocalypse, but I don’t think it’s a nothingburger. Anywhere around 5%-25 of the population now has long COVID. People suffered brain damage. There is clear evidence now that the vaccines set people up for constant reinfections. The mortality figures in Japan reached a sudden new record spike this winter. It’s a slow process, but something is happening. It remains to be seen whether this becomes the big problem, or whether it becomes a background problem like peak oil turned out to be.

In general it’s probably best not to pay too much attention to end-of-the-world prophecies. As humans, we have a death drive, a tendency to seek out death. It seems particularly a masculine phenomenon. Men, particularly the low status ones, want something big and external to happen, something that forces meaning upon their lives. When the first world war erupted, young men in Europe broke out in celebration. Something finally happened.

The Internet has a habit of further amplifying the apocalyptic rhetoric, because we’re all drowning in information. That’s why it’s important to really restrict your use, which I’m now trying. I read more books lately and spend less time online. In general my recommendation would be to try to accept the world more as it is, rather than hoping for it to change itself. As things are, is what we will have to deal with.

Happy Easter.

  1. Happy Easter to you too.

    > Nothing ever happens

U.S. Treasuries are puking, gold at $3,300/oz.

    Things are DEFINITELY happening.

When in doubt, listen to what the (((chosen ones))) have to say:

“Gold to $17,000 Minimum in a Marked to Market Revaluation”

Special shout-out to the “bond market vigilantes” who humiliated Trump (and Liz Truss).

“I used to think that if there was reincarnation, I wanted to come back as the President or the Pope or as a .400 baseball hitter. But now I would want to come back as the bond market. You can intimidate everybody.”

  2. Reading books is useful, because if you read widely then you’ll expand your consciousness by developing empathy for other points of view. It has become clear to me over the years that people who don’t read don’t learn how to think and communicate very well. Garbage in, garbage out. I just finished a biography of Giordano Bruno that was excellent. About to start another.

The world is what it is. What we can most easily change about it is ourselves, and we do that by learning from others who have something valuable to share— like we have here thanks to you and your viral biology insight.

Keep on reading and writing and trying to peel back the next layer as you go. Happy Easter.

  3. “And I would accept this narrative, if there were some actual signs of it, like, you know, a decline in the use of oil. There are of course no such signs.”

There may not have been an absolute oil production/ consumption decline but covid really had a huge effect.

If you extend 2002 through 2020 we are down about 25 million barrels per day from where we would have been if the trend continued. Why electric cars, work from home ??
Rest of article explains that peak oil was wrong, we just have less oil because of peak oil demand.

      • Greater efficiency should lead to greater consumption – Jevon’s paradox.

And lo, to my eyes anyway, it looks like overall consumption of fossil fuels has increased despite (if not because of) any and all gains in efficiency: https://ourworldindata.org/fossil-fuels

However, the best and most affordable oil is gone/going away. The fall has been made up for by increased fracking and so forth, but those wells deplete even faster and the fuel doesn’t have the same qualities – in particular it’s not as good for transport fuels.

Overall though, the loss of affordable oil, especially the stuff with the right kind of qualities for transport fuels, could start to really come home to roost, well, anytime now.

We cannot escape the fact that we live on a finite planet.

But we’re not interested in this at all.

        Death denial.

I bought a car around 20 years ago thinking it could see me to the end of the age of the personal motor car – I wouldn’t be surprised if it still made it – it’s a Toyota 🙂

  4. ” In general my recommendation would be to try to accept the world more as it is, rather than hoping for it to change itself. As things are, is what we will have to deal with.”

    Very wise.

  5. Billions of tonnes of micro-plastics, that will in the fullness of time degrade into nano-plastics, biologically integrating into cell walls, protein structures and lipid cells, will render at first infertile and then extinct all plant and animal life on planet Earth. Globo-homo-warming is the least of the problems – it pales into insignificance when compared with the nano-plastic total extinction event.

    Enjoy!

  6. Rintrah, since you are having headaches, you should make sure your blood pressure is okay. It is better to deal with that promptly, and avoid problems.

      • I don’t understand the link.

My mother has kidney disease so I have been reading numerous accounts and a lot of people say “I got stage (whatever) kidney disease due to high blood pressure and the only symptom was headaches.” Antipsychotics can cause high blood pressure. It’s easy enough to fix with lisonpril.

        • > I don’t understand the link.

You are not familiar with Wifejak?

          My mistake.

This is one of those moments where my immaturity (and familiarity with online discourse) clashes with your well-deserved maturity.

          (Head in hands right now)

          • Okay, I have found an online explanation. I think I am more like a mom vis a vis Ritrah; GenX is not wife age for a guy in his 30s. “Autist mom-like person says don’t blow out your kidneys by taking your antipsychotics without regard for renal function.”

          • @Kareninca: “GenX is not wife age for a guy in his 30s”

You must be an older GenX, closer to the boomers, because the youngest GenX was born in 1980, which is only 5 or 6 years older than someone who is currently 39, or in Rintrah’s case, are less than 10 years apart.

Personally, despite looking young enough to pass for a millennial, I would never date one, because there’s too much cultural incompatibility. I think it has to do with being one the last generations to grow up in an era without social media and smartphones, for us we can more clearly see how this change from primarily engaging with the natural world to that of artificial constructs, has created a new breed of human that is more predisposed to mental illness than all previous generations combined.

          • @Mehen: “You are not familiar with Wifejak?”

I never heard of it either, and I’m not old enough to be the mother of a millennial. I think it must be a guy thing, or rather an incel guy thing. I looked up Wifejak, and my first reaction was, why? Who wastes their time with this garbage? I never even heard of 4chan until a couple of years ago, and that’s probably a good thing.

          • @Big Bird: “I’m not old enough to be the mother of a millennial.”

I misspoke. Damn, I’m older than I thought. I guess I am old enough to be the mother of a millennial, but only the youngest ones, not all of them.

  7. Rintrah, you are making an incredible progress at self-healing, trying to “unplug” from attention-seeking, engagement-driven Internet “doomsaying” and other crap driving social networks.

I am trying to do the same thing. The social networks were destroying my mind and my attention span. I realized that the mostly-true shit I was posting about Covid vaccines was affecting specific individuals in a way that I realized was harmful to them.

A doom may be around the corner. It will likely be completely unexpected and come from something we all overlooked. But the online doomsayers become driven by the desire for attention and start ignoring facts. Fuck them. Fuck the Internet. Enjoy life while you still can.

I love your blog, and I hope that you and I can be a good influence or, at worst, not an influence.

    • well, try to seek ‘refuge’ in spiritual life, not a material escape though, as material life will deteriorate sooner or later.

Death comes to ANYONE eventually, it’s a doom on individual scale actually.
When facing death, one might realize the futility of material life. The same recognition might come on large scale, if humanity see the coming ‘doom’.

That’s the purpose of a doom.

    • I really appreciated your articles when you were publishing, Igor.

Reducing the rate of childhood vaccination would be doing genuine good in the world

And it is interesting to get updates on the fertility situation

  8. An hour ago someone walked past my patio dressed as a ten foot tall Easter Bunny and my dogs went insane with joyous yapping, they were so happy that one of them dropped her ball on the other side of the patio fence and I had to go borrow my father in law’s old person pick up stick to retrieve it. It was wonderful. Also I watched some scary videos of Spanish Catholic Easter rituals, which included a giant black cart and men with black hoods and outfits and ominous music. And I phoned my mom on the East Coast since she was having lunch at a Chinese buffet with some relatives after an Easter visit to other relatives in a facility (the Chinese buffets are open on Easter). And my favorite cousin (by marriage), who is borderline retarded but very kind, phoned me and gave me good advice; she gives the best advice despite or because of being extremely mentally simple. Rintrah, you need to stay as physically healthy as possible so that you can get older and enjoy these sorts of things.

  9. I think there’s something to be said for the Christian thing.

It’s useful and it also seems to be true.

We all survived peak oil and the ‘Mayan apocalypse’ etc, and yet we all know what’s coming:

“Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot—they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all— so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed.”

    • I was looking for Easter messages to inspire me, and this one made me laugh:

“Christ hopped up out the grave, which no bunny can do. This is the greatest story of being free. It is the biggest leap in history- from death to life. Have a blessed Easter!”

Okay, so no Tooth Fairy or Easter Bunny, we’ll just have to settle for the truly miraculous instead.

      Happy Easter!

  10. Oh, but you’re wrong.

SOMETHING is happening ALL THE TIME

Not the “things” which each individual’s imagination has cooked up as a result of their subconscious wants/needs/wishes and various other processes..

It’s the fact that every socio-political issue is split down the edge, and provides our individual minds the opportunity to interact with the “Other” which we perceive as our “enemies”. To have a scrap of difference between ourselves which gives this meaningless existence some “meaning” and “drama”.

    It’s all a story and a game.

    Happy Easter!

    • LIE TWENTY ONE

Bodies In Space Belong To Physics,
Souls In Bodies Belong To The Priests,
And Both Belong To The Politicians

When enough people repress or deny the same quality the
attribute appears as either a god or a devil. Thus, we are all
responsible for Jesus as well as Hitler. Now, what I just
      said is truly metaphysics.

Isolating qualities from the whole and giving them inde
pendent existence is simply a convenient device that allows
us to worship or slaughter each other.

*Attribute isolation is a primitive technique*
      *of the propagandist, the fascist,*
      *the professor and the priest.*

Separating parts from the whole and then forgetting the
whole leads humans to believe that they can destroy “evil”
      while still having “good.”

*Man is torn between his fear of hell
      and his greed for heaven.*

The notion of limitation rests on the desire and terror that
the old laws of physics will be suspended. The joke is that
Newtonian physics, Plato’s caves and Aristotelian logic
never hindered a *living* being. They simply used the models
to achieve their ends and continued dancing.

*Our greatest pastime is to create idols
      and later destroy them *

*Most men want to be insects*

You cannot avoid the ecstasy-terror of existence no
matter how creative you are. There is no end to self
      overcoming.
Have you ever heard of Jehovah having a good belly
laugh? Or, for that matter, his son? They are miserable
creatures and in their misery the flock take refuge.

Never be fooled by a long face or a quick tongue — it
      doesn’t mean *you* know anything.

      BECOME WHO YOU ARE

  11. “Nothing ever happens” says the madman living in a technoscape which horrifies not only his fellow living men, but would have been utterly unthinkworthy to his own father but twenty years ago. The world as we know it is unmaking herself before our eyes, and the fools, scores and scores of them, speak out, with a voice whose father they know not: “NOTHING EVER HAPPENS”

    Death

  12. Have you ever had that thought, that perhaps and only perhaps – lets just entertain the thought – the planet itself is conscious about whats happening on him?

So if Gaia not only has the awereness of whats happening on her, but also the choice of how to react to it, your whole point of worrying would be pointless.

Like… what if the storms, earthquakes, climate shifts—aren’t just reactions, but expressions? Not just consequences of physics, but signals or even emotions? Maybe it “feels” our impact, our presence, even if it’s not in a way we’d recognize as sentient.

So, just for your own wellbeing, lets assume, that our planet is self regulating, that we are not the protagonists here. Oh that humans got out of control I gotta fix that – then Gaia might shift things to restore equilibrium.

Mass extinctions? Ice ages? Plagues? Climate upheavals? In that framework, they’re not random or just tragic events—they’re course corrections. Painful, yes, but necessary from the planet’s point of view. Healing processes.

Why worry so much? Just watch it unfold. Of course I like to understand why, when, how and what exactly happens as well.

Lets just enjoy the show while the music is stil playing.

  13. Wow. I just typed a comment in here that made me realise I oughta get some help like advised. But you know.. now I fear.. nothing ever happens with me, I know that..
A week OFF life was good. Even though I really like what I do.

  14. In this stage of the world I prefer to stay out of society as much as possible. Engaging and investing energy now in this confusion and mess makes no sense to me. I rather stay on the sideline. If I make it alive to the other side and if a positive new world emerges, then I will engage. If I wont survive, then it be so.
So for now: I let it burn and mind my own business.

  15. This Tool track is badass, but it wasn’t until my relationship with Tryptie that I understood it as a Gnostic prayer

    We are spirit
    Bound to this flesh
    We go around
    One foot nailed down
    But bound to
    Reach out beyond
    This flesh

    Become pneuma
    We are
    Will and wonder
    Bound to
    Recall, remember
(We are born of) one breath
    One word
(We are all) one spark, sun becoming

    Child
    Wake up
    Child
    Release the light
    Wake up now
    Child
    Wake up
    Child
    Release the light
    Wake up now, child

    Spirit
    Spirit
    Spirit
    Spirit

    Bound to
    This flesh
    This guise
    This mask
    This dream
    Wake up remember

(We are) born of one breath
    One word
    (We are all) one spark
    Sun becoming
    Pneuma
    Reach out, beyond

    Wake up, remember
(We are born of) one breath
    One word
    (We are all) one spark
    Eyes full of wonder

  16. Happy Easter to you too!
Christ is risen! as we say in the East.
I am glad you are doing better! Deciding to “slow down” the blogging a bit sounds like a very good idea.. (I often find myself trying to slow things down a bit, with mixed results of course)
